FED:Rescind Israel policy, says Albanese
CANBERRA, April 18 AAP - A senior Labor figure says it's time for a Sydney council
to ditch a controversial proposed boycott of Israel.
Marrickville council will meet on Tuesday night to vote on the boycott, which has created
division in the area and is estimated to cost local ratepayers $3.5 million.
Mayor Fiona Byrne, who leads the controlling Greens team in the council, said in an
article for the Sydney Morning Herald she will propose rescinding part of the original
motion but stood by the principle of the boycott.
Federal Greens leader Bob Brown says he's pleased to see the policy reversal.
The area's federal MP, Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese, told reporters in
Canberra the Greens councillors had divided what was a "harmonious" community.
"It's time, when the council meets tomorrow night, for the council to unite, to put
aside this division and to say that the council should prioritise getting back to basics
- not be an alternative government for Australia that has brought the local community
into a state of ridicule across the country," Mr Albanese said.
"The Greens party need to understand that what they have done is be obsessed with playing
political games at the expense of the local community."
Mr Albanese said the Labor councillors on the council will vote to rescind the Greens' policy.

Mobile ads buzz to stay muted
Byline: Goh Thean Eu
Edition: Main/Lifestyle
Section: Business Times
Type: News
MOBILE advertising still draws lukewarm response but industry players including mobile operators and mobile advertising companies remain optimistic that it will turn huge eventually. Unfortunately, it won't be in 2011.
Currently, mobile advertisements do not contribute significantly to mobile operators' overall revenue, but experts believe it may be significant within the next five years.
"We know it will be big, but it's hard to predict when it will be big. For sure, within the next two to three years it will be very small, very negligible. Question is whether it is going to happen in the fourth or fifth year, or beyond, that's the part we are not sure," said Axiata Group Bhd president and group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim in a Business Times interview recently.
Industry players believe it will take a while before it hits the critical mass in Malaysia, when consumers spend more time viewing advertisements on their mobile phones, and when advertisers willing to put the money in.
In the UK, Internet has surpassed TV as the most important media for advertising spend, taking more than 20 per cent of ad dollars spent in the market.
Lai Kok Fung, chief executive officer of BuzzCity Sdn Bhd, a company specialising in mobile advertising, said it will take at least five years before the market in Malaysia reaches the levels of the UK.
"Digital marketing growth in Malaysia will likely be driven by both online and mobile advertising, and this may take anywhere from 5-10 years to reach the UK level," added Lai, who also expects mobile advertising in Malaysia will grow at least 50 per cent annually over the next few years.
Jamaludin believes one of the key drivers for mobile advertising to be huge is the mobile operators' capability to truly understand its customers.
"Can you imagine which device people bring everywhere they go? There're not many devices, besides watches, this (mobile devices) is it. That's one aspect. Secondly, how many companies have the data that we have? We know where our customers are, whether they are awake at night, whether they use more data than voice, whether they actively use social networking sites, we know their characteristics.
"For example, if you have just arrived in Singapore, and we know that you are a high-end user, you can receive a 'Welcome to Singapore, by the way, there's a sale in ...' message from us.
"Of course, legally speaking, we can only use the data within the legal bounds. That is something we have to be very careful about," Jamaludin explained.
Mobile advertisements come in various forms. These include the conventional text messages, multimedia text messages and advertisements that are specially designed for viewing on mobile phones. In fact, some advertisers are offering free minutes, and text messages, as long as the users listen to advertisers' messages, send some short codes and key words imprinted on the advertiser's products or take part in some form of mobile phone-based contests.
Lai believes the next wave of growth for mobile advertising will come from "small screen" users, i.e. users who surf the Internet via their smart phones.
"In recent years, with mobile Internet tariff dropping and the emergence of affordable and browsing-friendly smartphones and feature phones, mobile advertising is moving towards pull-based display advertising.
"As more consumers surf the mobile web and use mobile applications, many ad-supported sites and applications are embedding relevant advertising in suitable places on mobile web sites or applications. Advertisers tend to follow the eye-balls and allocate their budget accordingly. This is especially true for the 'unwired' groups - consumers that spend almost all the Internet surfing time through mobile phones rather than PCs," Lai explained.
With all the optimism on mobile advertising, what is stopping the trend from skyrocketing?
Lai said: "At first, unscrupulous SMS marketing raised issues of intrusiveness and privacy. Then there were other issues like a lack of standards or high data rates.
"While these are better regulated now, these early issues also brought with them the fear of failure, the lack of relevant case studies and subsequently thin budgets. The only way for agencies to inspire a client into mobile advertising is to lead with a strategy that makes sense. And one simple way to start is to pay for clicks as an effective investment in mobile advertising."
Although analysts believe that mobile advertising has the potential to grow, it takes a lot of work that the operators may not want to invest in.
"The operators have the technology to do this right. But it's not happening. Maybe it's pure laziness, maybe it's too time consuming to look into these data, as the time can be used to grow the mobile data businesses. Otherwise, why am I constantly receiving text messages on clubs and nightspots when I'm not interested at all? It's getting annoying. I don't mind advertisements, but it has to have some re-levance to me.
"All the industry needs is one player, usually the market challenger, to get this right, and it will then pressure the bigger players to do a better job," said an analyst who declined to be named.

FED:Turnbull enlisted to woo marginal voters
MELBOURNE, Aug 20 AAP - The Liberal candidate for the marginal Victorian seat of La
Trobe has enlisted the help of former environment minister Malcolm Turnbull to woo voters
on his environmental credentials.
Mr Turnbull, who was replaced by Tony Abbott as Liberal leader last year, has sent
a letter to residents in the leafy Dandenong Ranges area of the sprawling electorate,
asking them to vote for Jason Wood, who holds the seat by 0.5 per cent.
As Liberal leader, Mr Turnbull supported the Rudd government's emissions trading scheme
(ETS), but the policy was ditched when Mr Abbott took over the party.
The letter, signed "Malcolm Turnbull, Former Minister for the Environment", sets out
Mr Woods' environmental views, including that there is "clear evidence of global environmental
pollution and that humans are making a contribution to changes in our climate".
Mr Turnbull also outlines the environmental initiatives he was responsible for in the
electorate as environment minister.
"Voting for Jason Wood will keep a strong voice for the environment in parliament," he says.
Mr Wood told AAP Mr Turnbull put his political career to the test protecting the environment,
and was the best person to remind Dandenong Ranges residents what the former coalition
government had done for the area.
He said Mr Turnbull had committed almost $3.5 million to the area in the 2007 election,
but Labor had done nothing since it came to power.
"I make no apology for getting Malcolm out there and reminding people that we had all
this committed and Labor took it all away because they got the Greens preference vote,"
he said.
Mr Wood said he was furious with the Greens for doing a preference deal with Labor,
without getting any commitment for the Dandenong Ranges.
"If you are going to preference Labor, that's fine, but get some value for the preferences,
because if Labor's elected, we get no extra funding," he said.
The Liberals' environment spokesman Greg Hunt also had visited the area during the
election campaign, Mr Wood said.

Qld: Wild rivers will cost jobs, says miner
EDS: Changing keyword from Bauxite
By Evan Schwarten
CAIRNS, April 13 AAP - More than $1 billion in economic impact and about 1700 jobs
would be lost if a wild rivers declaration over a fourth Cape York river goes ahead as
planned, the CEO of a controversial mining project has warned.
Cape Alumina CEO Paul Messenger has called on the Queensland government to amend its
proposed declaration for the Wenlock River or risk his company's planned Pisolite Hills
bauxite project.
"The proposed wild rivers declaration is flawed and must be amended," Dr Messenger
told reporters in Cairns on Tuesday.
"If it is amended the project will go ahead and create jobs - if it is not it will
seriously jeopardise the Pisolite Hills project.
"No project, no jobs - it's a pretty simple scenario."
He said an economic impact assessment had shown the project would deliver $600 million
in economic benefit and contribute $1.2 billion to the national GDP over the 15-year life
of the project.
It would also create 1700 jobs, including 1300 full-time jobs, with the biggest beneficiaries
being the nearby indigenous community of Mapoon.
Environmentalists, led by Terri Irwin, have rallied against the mining project and
called on the government to proceed with the declaration in its current form, which places
significant limits on development within the Wenlock Basin.
Almost 300,000 people have signed a Wilderness Society petition supporting the declaration.
Part of the mining lease overlaps the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve and the Irwin family
have argued the project would have a devastating environmental impact.
Cape Alumina has argued for the 1km buffers, known as high protection areas, to be
reduced to 200 metres for springs and minor tributaries, although the company says its
operation will not come within 2km of the river itself.
Dr Messenger urged the government not to be swayed by what he termed "misinformation"
from green groups and sought a decision based on science.
"We will protect the Wenlock River, we will protect all of the areas of environmental
value and we will demonstrate that you can have environmental protection and economic
development co-existing," he said.
The company is due to release an environmental impact study for the project in June
and hopes to begin shipping bauxite by 2012.
The Queensland government is expected to make a decision on the Wenlock wild rivers
declaration proposal in the coming months.

FED: Savvy motorists save millions in parking fines
By Crystal Ja
CANBERRA, Aug 30 AAP - Motorists in NSW and Victoria have saved more than $6 million
by appealing parking and speeding fines over the past year, Freedom of Information documents
reveal.
In NSW, 13,974 clued-up drivers successfully appealed fines, avoiding payments totalling
$4.7 million between 2007 and 2008, according to figures obtained by consumer advocate
Choice.
It showed almost a third of all drivers who argued their case were proven correct.
And the strike rate was even better in Victoria, where 45 per cent of motorists appealing
against parking infringements were successful.
They saved at least $1.7 million by correctly blaming faulty parking meters, hard-to-read
or missing signposts as well as other blatant errors made by ticket inspectors.
It was a clear sign drivers should not have to cop incorrect or unfair fines, Choice
spokesman Christopher Zinn said.
"Choice in no way condones speeding or illegal parking but there are inevitably cases
in which an automatic fine or conviction without reviewing the full circumstances may
be patently unfair," he said.
"There are systems of appeal and, as with any other dispute resolution system, it pays
for consumers to understand them and how they work."
Only 10 per cent of parking fines in Victoria or 166,817 were appealed in the financial
year ending June 2008.
But as a result 59,539 fines were withdrawn, while a further 17,543 were replaced with a warning.
It proved persistence sometimes pays off, Mr Zinn said.
In 2007/2008, NSW motorists saved $3.21 million in parking fines after 23,816 out of
81,326 cases were successfully appealed.
Contesting speeding fines also produced savings, preventing 11,658 drivers from forking
out $1.53 million, out of a possible 43,805 cases.
It was important all drivers were aware of their rights in fighting unfair fines, given
the avenues of appeal differ from state to state, Mr Zinn said.
For example, you can appeal speed camera fines in NSW if you have a good driving record
over the past decade, whereas Vicroads only look at the past two years.
On the flip side, Adelaide doesn't consider driving records at all.
Mr Zinn urged all motorists to take a closer look at their relevant appeal systems.

ACT: Former cricketer took boy shopping after sex assault: court
By Bonny Symons-Brown
CANBERRA, April 21 AAP - A former Queensland cricketer accused of sexually assaulting
a teenage boy during a private coaching session took the youth shopping afterwards, a
court has been told.
Ian Harold King, 65, has pleaded not guilty to 41 charges relating to the sexual assault
of 10 different boys between January 1989 and May 1998 while he was a junior cricket coach
in Canberra.
At his committal hearing in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday, one of King's alleged
victims said the pair first met in June or July 1993, when he was 16.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was then part of a pre-season cricket
training camp conducted by King.
After a couple of months of group training sessions with between 20 and 30 other boys,
the man said he then accepted King's offer of one-on-one coaching.
"I was very keen to progress my cricket at that point," the now 31-year-old told the court.
He said the meetings would usually begin at King's house where they would discuss what
kind of training would take place before heading to one of the local ovals to practise.
After the coaching sessions, the two would often return to King's house for a shower
or something to eat. The man said he was sexually assaulted on at least two occasions.
"I had a shower, after the shower I can't say exactly how it happened but it ended
up with myself naked on the bed and Ian being there as well," the man said.
The incidents would begin with a light massage, he said, and would progress to King
performing oral sex on him.
After one incident, the man said King took him clothes shopping and bought him a new
shirt and pair of pants.
It was after hearing through the media that King had been arrested for committing an
indecent act against a child that he decided to come forward with his information, he
said.
King was extradited to the ACT from South Australia last July to face the charges,
which now include sexual intercourse without consent and sexual intercourse with a young
person.
"After hearing on the ABC national news that Mr King had been arrested I called the
police and said I'd like to add something to that," he said.
The man's evidence followed that of another alleged victim who said he was molested
by King at his southern Canberra home between December 1, 1992 and January 31, 1993 during
private cricket coaching.
The man, who also cannot be named, said that during a discussion about his batting
technique King began asking him explicit questions before putting his hand down the boy's
tracksuit pants and touching his genitals.
The man, who was then 14 or 15, said he was home alone at the time of the alleged assault
but that it started in his laundry where his neighbours could have seen.
"The defendant, his hands had been under my clothing for about 20 seconds from that
point in time so he suggested we move because we didn't want anyone to see this," the
man said.
King then allegedly took the boy further inside the home and continued to touch him
for another two to five minutes before saying: "See, you are enjoying this aren't you?"
The former fast bowler, who played for Queensland from 1969 to 1970, sat hunched in
his chair with his head bowed as both men gave evidence.
King began his playing career in Sydney before returning to his home state of Queensland
to become their first Aboriginal player since Eddie Gilbert in the 1930s, according to
the Cricinfo website.
The hearing continues before Magistrate John Burns.

Australia-wide participation by schools.
CBCA national president Bronwen Bennett said this year's shortlist represented a diverse
range of books.
"This year there seemed to be a very strong trend towards the conservation, environment
and global warming - those big issues," Ms Bennett said.
Book of the Year prizes will be offered for older readers, younger readers and early
childhood. There will also be prizes for information books and picture books.
Nearly 400 books were entered for his year's awards, with the winner to be announced

NSW: Protesters won't be moved on demo route
SYDNEY, Aug 30 AAP - Protesters are standing firm on their proposed route for a major
demonstration during next week's APEC summit in Sydney, saying they are willing to go
to court if necessary.
Members of The Stop Bush Coalition, angered that their route for a demonstration on
September 8 had been rejected by NSW police, today protested outside the government offices
of NSW Premier Morris Iemma.
Coalition spokesman Alex Bainbridge said the proposed route, which included marching
near the US Consulate Office in Martin Place and parts of Macquarie Street, was reasonable.
"The option for the police if they don't like the march route that we've taken is they
can take us to the Supreme Court," he told reporters.
"We have said we are more than happy to meet them on that ground, we believe our march
route is reasonable and we would like them do that quickly."
Mr Bainbridge said a student protest march arranged for Wednesday, September 5, also
had been ruled out, even though it would be five blocks away from a declared area.
The NSW Greens also have been told they are not permitted to stage "street theatre"
in Martin Place during the APEC summit.
"When you add up all of these things it seems like a clear and systematic ban on the
right to protest during APEC and we reject that," Mr Bainbridge said.
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle also called on police to inform 29 people who have been
put on an exclusion list from the Sydney CBD during the APEC week.
"We had expressed our concern about the establishment of an APEC blacklist to target
particular people and to say they are not allowed in their city of Sydney - we don't think
it appropriate," Senator Nettle said.
Incoming police commissioner Andrew Scipione has indicated those on the exclusion list
would be notified from today.

NSW: Jetstar in damage control after cancelling more flights
SYDNEY, April 17 AAP - Qantas budget airline Jetstar is in damage control again after
two of its planes missed Sydney's landing curfews on Sunday night, delaying passengers
overnight and prompting the cancellation of an early morning flight.
It comes after about 300 Australians were stranded for two days at Honolulu airport
when their plane broke down and Jetstar botched attempts to get them home.
In the latest incident, a mechanical glitch on one of its planes caused a delay that
grew worse throughout Sunday, The Australian newspaper reports.
The knock-on effect led to the cancellation of flights from Avalon airport, near Geelong,
and from the Gold Coast because they were unable to reach Sydney before the city's 11pm
(AEST) flight curfew.
The delays meant a flight leaving Sydney for Hamilton Island at 6.55am (AEST) yesterday
had to be cancelled.
"We obviously had to put passengers and crew up overnight to our cost and move those
aircraft this morning," Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway told the newspaper.
"We did call-outs to passengers last evening from about 9.30pm (AEST) onwards because
we knew we weren't going to get one of the aircraft in, and we got in touch with over
two-thirds of the passengers."

Fed: Out of sight but not out of mind: hard-hat heroes of 2006
By Doug Conway, Senior Correspondent
SYDNEY, AAP - They became national icons one kilometre underground, unknown, unheard and unseen.
They were out of sight for a fortnight, but never out of mind.
Their fight for life captivated millions.
By winning it, two knockabout Tassie miners, BRANT WEBB and TODD RUSSELL, provided
the most uplifting moment of the year and stamped themselves Australia's biggest winners
of 2006.
When they finally emerged into daylight, the thirty-something hard-hats found themselves
instant folk heroes.
It's wrong to assume their lives suddenly became one flawless, rosy idyll, for they
expect to carry forever the mental scars of their entombment and the loss of their colleague
Larry Knight.
But they did resurface with families to embrace them and a lucrative media deal which
means they now earn a living above ground, one selling boats and the other with a management
company.
Webb and Russell made contingency plans while trapped at Beaconsfield to sever their
own limbs, if necessary, to get out.
Their story carried echoes of Stuart Diver's miraculous survival in the Thredbo landslide
nine years earlier.
It showed what everyone desperately wants to believe in every dark moment - that there
is life at the end of the tunnel.
Of the other big winners of 2006, none united the nation so euphorically as the SOCCEROOS.
Dutchman GUUS HIDDINK'S team notched Australia's first ever goal at the World Cup finals,
through TIM CAHILL, its first ever victory, against Japan, and set the world on its heels
by pushing eventual winner Italy to the brink.
When villain-of-the-piece Fabio Grosso connived a fateful penalty, LUCAS NEILL might
not have felt like the Socceroos' biggest personal winner, but that's how he ended up.
The nation empathised with him as the victim of Grosso's last-minute "dive", he was
acclaimed as Australia's outstanding player of the tournament, he was the number one poster
boy among female fans and he went on to become Socceroo captain.
KEVIN RUDD was the biggest political winner, wresting Labor's federal leadership from
Kim Beazley in a 49-39 caucus ballot.
He brought in JULIA GILLARD in as his deputy and reshaped Labor's front bench to include
former rocker PETER GARRETT as environment spokesman.
BINDI IRWIN won the hearts of the nation, as perhaps only an eight-year-old can, with
her cheerful stoicism after the tragic death of her father, TV's Crocodile Hunter Steve
Irwin, off the Queensland coast.
Another brave primary schooler, Sydney's SOPHIE DELEZIO, gladdened hearts just by turning
up to school again after a second horrific car accident which doctors did not expect her
to survive.
Mountain climber LINCOLN HALL was given up for dead on his descent from the summit
of Mount Everest, but survived to tell astonished rescuers: "I imagine you are surprised
to see me here."
Business tycoons JAMES PACKER and KERRY STOKES positioned themselves for major expansion
through leveraged foreign buyouts which cashed them up with billions of dollars, yet enabled
them to retain control of their media empires.
Stokes's Seven Network came within a whisker of topping Packer's Nine in the TV ratings
war, and combined with Ten to snatch the lucrative AFL rights, literally over Kerry Packer's
dead body, with a combined $780 million bid which trumped the last roll of the dice in
the late mogul's business career.
The biggest job in television went to EDDIE McGUIRE, who swapped life in front of the
camera to go behind the scenes and run the Nine network, though still with a very high
public profile.
Brisbane immunologist IAN FRAZER was named Australian of the Year for developing a
vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, and seemed even more delighted when federal funding
approval paved the way for its use in a national immunisation program from next year.
LABOR retained power in all states and territories, with PETER BEATTIE winning his
fourth straight election in Queensland, STEVE BRACKS making it a hat-trick in Victoria,
MIKE RANN returning to power in South Australia and PAUL LENNON taking Tasmania's election.
In Western Australia, ALAN CARPENTER took the reins from Geoff Gallop, who quit politics
because of depression.
GLENN STEVENS was appointed governor of the Reserve Bank, replacing the outgoing Ian
Macfarlane and taking control of the nation's interest rates.
Author and journalist GERALDINE BROOKS won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her novel, March.
Australian-born PRINCESS MARY of Denmark christened her first child Christian and is
now looking forward to the birth of her second.
Australian athletes led by world record-breaking swimmer LEISEL JONES had no difficulty
crowning themselves COMMONWEALTH GAMES champions again in Melbourne.
The retirement of Ian Thorpe, Australia's greatest Olympian, paved the way for GRANT
HACKETT to usurp him at Beijing in 2008.
And with vengance burning in every fibre, a determined RICKY PONTING led from the front
as Australia sought to recapture cricket's prized urn in the most eagerly anticipated
Ashes series ever.
THE LOSERS:
KIM BEAZLEY lost his third chance at the biggest prize in politics, The Lodge, when
his caucus colleagues dumped him as Labor leader in favour of Kevin Rudd, though he won
accolades for his dignified exit on the same day his brother David died suddenly in Perth.
Beazley's deputy JENNY MACKLIN went, too, deciding not to re-contest when it was evident
the numbers weren't there.
Prime Minister Howard remained teflon-coated over the degenerating war in Iraq, even
though it cost his key ally GEORGE BUSH control of both houses of congress and DONALD
RUMSFELD his job as US defence secretary.
PETER COSTELLO had to pull his horns in yet again after Mr Howard disputed his deputy's
claims of a leadership handover pact and set his sights resolutely on a fifth successive
election win in 2007.
The biggest problem for state Liberals was losing leaders and elections, notably ROB
DOYLE and TED BAILLIEU in Victoria and LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG in Queensland.
The biggest problem for Australia's state Labor governments was a succession of unrelated
mistakes and scandals which among other things cost NSW ministers CARL SCULLY and MILTON
ORKOPOULOS their jobs, forced disgraced former WA premier BRIAN BURKE to quit the party
and led to conspiracy charges against ex-Tasmanian deputy premier BRYAN GREEN.
The Cole inquiry into the large-scale bribery of Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq left
open the possibility of criminal charges against 11 former AWB executives, including chairman
TREVOR FLUGGE, and former BHP executive NORMAN DAVIDSON KELLY.
The DEFENCE DEPARTMENT's blushes could not be spared in the bungled repatriation of
the body of private JAKE KOVCO, Australia's first military death in Iraq.
Terrorism suspect DAVID HICKS remained behind bars for a fifth year without trial at
Guantanamo Bay.
FARMERS faced their fifth year of a crippling drought, with depression and suicide
emerging as a serious problem in the bush, while in the cities HOME LENDERS with traditionally
bigger mortgages had to cope with their fourth successive rate rise in two years.
TV presenter NAOMI ROBSON quit her job at the end of a year in which she was pilloried
over Seven's farcical mission to rescue a six-year-old jungle boy called Wah-Wah, supposedly
from a Papuan cannibal tribe's coooking pot.
A rare circulatory illness forced Yellow Wiggle GREG PAGE to step down from Australian
entertainment's highest earning outfit.
Australia's chief Muslim cleric, SHEIK TAJ ALDIN ALHILALI, sparked a storm of outrage
by suggesting immodestly dressed women provoked rape and comparing them to meat left out
near a cat.
Former Test cricketer DEAN JONES was sacked by his South African television employer
after referring to a Muslim player as a terrorist.
MEL GIBSON'S mouth also got him into trouble, the Oscar-winning actor eventually apologising
for anti-Semitic comments made to US police who arrested him for drink driving.
Golfer GREG NORMAN split from his wife Laura, while country singer KEITH URBAN married
Australia's hottest actor Nicole Kidman only to check into a rehabilitation clinic soon
after.
Wallaby star WENDELL SAILOR was banned from rugby union for two years for cocaine use.
TV fisherman REX HUNT called himself a sleaze and begged forgiveness from his wife
of 34 years after admitting paying three women for sex over more than a decade.
Convicted killer BRUCE BURRELL was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of
Sydney mother Kerry Whelan nine years ago.
BRAD COOPER got up to eight years for fraud and bribery relating to collapsed insurer HIH.
Former Labor leader MARK LATHAM was placed on two-year good behaviour bond for malicious
damage to a news photographer's $6,700 camera.
Six members of the BALI NINE drug smuggling ring ended the year facing execution.

SA: Cyclone Larry provides windfall for SA tourism
By Brad Watts
ADELAIDE, April 2 AAP - Cyclone Larry, which ravaged north Queensland, has provided
an unexpected windfall for South Australia's tourism industry.
Some of SA's most popular tourist regions, including the Barossa Valley and Riverland,
have been inundated by international and interstate visitors who detoured to South Australia
instead of holidaying in north Queensland.
Barossa Wine and Tourism manager Steve Callery said the category five cyclone, which
struck on March 20, forced many travellers to reschedule plans at the last minute.
Mr Callery said most tourists who headed for the Barossa hailed from Britain and other
parts of Europe.
Many who changed their plans were domestic tourists, some of whom were first-time visitors
to the region.
"It's been a really busy couple weeks for local tour operators and it's a plus for
South Australia - it's hard to put an exact dollar value on it though," Mr Callery said.
"We've also seen a lot of Victorians that came here to escape the Commonwealth Games,"
Mr Callery said.
"The boom has been totally unexpected as travellers have obviously made a decision
fairly quickly to come here."
Riverland tour operators also reported a jump of about 20 per cent in visitors after
the devastation caused by cyclone Larry.
Berri Visitor Centre tourism officer Nicki Mackay said there had been a lot more visitors
to the region over the past two weeks who were scared to go to Queensland.
"A lot of people have changed their minds about going to north Queensland as they weren't
sure about how much damage has been done," Ms Mackay said.
Ms Mackay said new visitors to the Riverland had also enjoyed wine tasting and going
on Murray River cruises.

Banda, Hastings Kamuzu
His political activities were aroused by opposition to the Central African Federation, which in 1953 federated Nyasaland (later to become Malawi) with white-ruled Southern Rhodesia. As a result, he was invited to lead the Nyasaland African Congress, which in 1960 became the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), and returned home in 1958 after an absence of over forty years. After outspoken attacks on federation, including a period in jail, he became Prime Minister, and achieved separate independence for Malawi in 1964.
An autocratic and deeply conservative individual, he quarrelled immediately after independence with the younger and more radical members of his party, whom he ousted from office with the support of the British Governor-General. He became President in 1966 and President for Life in 1971. Malawi under his rule was peaceful but severely repressed, and economic development was slow; a committed capitalist, he used his position to build a large private company of his own. Internationally, he expressed outspoken contempt for the African consensus, and in 1970 established full diplomatic relations with apartheid South Africa, earning continental odium but gaining substantial aid. In his later years he became senile, but retained office until international pressure coupled with domestic dissent forced the MCP to allow multi-party elections in May 1994. Banda lost, but though accused by the new government of the murder of political opponents, he was unfit to stand trial.

Perceptronics Partners with Stan Lee Media To Deliver New Collaborative Entertainment for the Internet.
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., May 30 /PRNewswire/ --
Perceptronics, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: PCTR) today announced a strategic alliance with Stan Lee Media, Inc. (Nasdaq: SLEE), premier creator of episodic animated entertainment on the Internet, for the development of multi-user collaborative applications and products based on Perceptronics' IC3D/Wythtm Technology.
Stan Lee Media is an Internet-based, multimedia production, marketing, and licensing company founded by pop-culture icon Stan Lee, co-creator of such classic characters as Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and The X-Men. More than two billion copies of books featuring characters Mr. Lee co-created have been published in 100 countries and 27 languages. Stan Lee Media has partnered with a range of talent and technology companies to create a new genre of Internet delivered animation, featuring 3- to 5-minute "Webisodes" that integrate voiceover, music and sound effects with cutting edge animation.
The result has been to establish Stan Lee Media as the largest independent content creation, production and distribution brand on the Internet. The premier in March, 2000 of Stan Lee Media's new 7th Portal Team of Super Heroes on the Shockwave.com Web site caused such an enthusiastic response it overloaded the site's servers, and more than 1 million downloads of the first episode were registered within days.
Under their strategic alliance, the companies intend to jointly develop online applications and products for use by Stan Lee Media in its business activities. Perceptronics will showcase its collaborative interaction capabilities from IC3D/Wyth for Animation with Stan Lee Media's global branded entertainment content in games, environments, e-commerce shopping and other content using Macromedia's Flash and Shockwave. The applications will be developed as projects funded by Stan Lee Media, who will have the exclusive rights to their use, as well as the right to sub-license the constituent IC3D/Wyth Technology. The parties will share in ownership of any jointly developed new products and/or tools, and each party will have the right to use and market them.
"Stan Lee's minions include a fabulous bunch of highly creative and productive industry veterans and innovators," said Richard Moskowitz, Perceptronics' CEO. "We are thrilled and honored to work with Stan's great people to create new types of applications that combine the strengths of both companies to deliver entertainment to a global audience of Web users."
"We have been very fortunate in our strategic alliances to date," continued Moskowitz, "but this one truly connects us with a master of entertainment, who has shown a unique ability to adapt traditional formats to the dynamic and interactive Internet environment. What a terrific showcase for our IC3D/Wyth products!"
Gary Manfredi, director of technology at Stan Lee Media, said, "What I find exciting about the IC3D/Wyth Technology is that it enables a key component to creating truly interactive experiences -- multi-player functionality. People are much more interested in competing and collaborating with each other than with a computer simulation. Kids can play together in a new way and join with others from around the world. Perceptronics' products seamlessly adds this functionality to our current content technologies such as Flash, Shockwave, Java, etc."
Perceptronics' IC3D/Wyth for Animation (patent-pending) allows a group of Internet users to control and view collaboratively a synchronized Flash, Shockwave or other animated presentation. Everybody in the group is able to see and hear the same material simultaneously, and everybody can have a hand on the "remote controller."
The collaborative interaction is accomplished by using the IC3D Framework for shared coordination of the animated presentation among the collaborative group and control of the presentation from the parent Web site. The normal media server or servers associated with the parent Web site delivers the animation content in synchrony to the multiple user group. Adding new collaborative capabilities via Perceptronics' IC3D/Wyth technology thus need not require major changes or modifications to Web sites now offering single-user interaction from Flash, Shockwave or other animation media.
Perceptronics' business is to develop, produce and market software products and services that allow Web site developers and owners to create online collaborative experiences that meet the growing demand for expanded multi-user interactivity on the Internet. A description of the Company's IC3D Technology is found at http://ic3d.perceptronics.com.
Safe Harbor Statement:
Statements by Mr. Richard Moskowitz, as well as the above statements regarding the Company's expectations about growth and marketing strategies, new and existing products, and future financial performance are Forward Looking Statements that are subject to a number of risks and uncertainties. These risks and uncertainties include, without limitation: (1) technological factors affecting the development and commercial fielding of the IC3D Framework; (2) competitive factors in the Internet industry, including the ability of the Company to compete against larger, well-funded companies; (3) cash flow factors affecting the Company's operations; (4) the ability of the Company to obtain required financing, that would affect further development and marketing of the IC3D Framework; and (5) competitive factors and contracting contingencies in the defense simulation industry and in particular in the international defense business. These and other risks and uncertainties are discussed in greater detail from time to time in the Company's SEC filings and reports.

A MODEST PROPOSAL FOR CURBING 'ATTACK' ADS.
Advertising Age, Jan. 29, 1996: "Mudslinging begins early . . ."
Advertising Age, Oct. 26, 1998: ". . . politicians are on the attack."
So what else is new? Isn't there any way to end this kind of political sleaze and have a campaign truly devoted to the issues?
The answer is an emphatic yes.
If we look back in our nation's history, we discover there was a process for keeping personal attacks to a minimum. Thus, Alexander Hamilton refrained from further attacks on Vice President Aaron Burr after July 11, 1804. Charles Dickenson, a Tennessee attorney, discontinued his charges that Andrew Jackson's wife, Rachel, was guilty of bigamy after Nov. 20, 1806. The method was simple -- the use of a fine old American tradition: the duel.
Unfortunately, as this concept of holding one responsible for his or her words has disappeared from the American political scene, the language of politics has grown more strident, gross and obscene. Thus, the return of "combat between persons, armed with lethal weapons, which would be held according to prearranged rules, to settle a quarrel or a point of honor" seems to be an excellent way of improving the level of political debate and discussion.
If the return of the duel is the solution to this problem, how can it be brought back into the mainstream of 21st century American life? There seem to be no legal impediments, since the nation has no law barring duels. Given the strict constructionist approach of the current Supreme Court, there appears to be little chance of obstruction by the judiciary.
There do appear to be three requirements. First, each candidate must accept total responsibility for anything and everything said or aired by himself, his supporters or even by "soft money" affiliates. This is obviously necessary to prevent the assignment of "dirty tricks" to others and then disclaim responsibility. Not that this would ever happen for, in the words of Marc Anthony, "these (politicians) are all honorable men."
Secondly there must be agreement on the options. Any candidate challenged by an opponent could take one of the following actions: 1) he could admit that he or his supporters had lied and he would be required to publicize that admission through the use of advertising that cost twice as much as that spent on smearing his opponent, or 2) he could stand by his statement and proceed with arrangements for the duel.
Finally, there must be an agreement on the many minor but still important details apart from the rules governing the duel itself. Would the duel be a private affair, as in the past, or would it be held in public view in a large stadium? If public, would it be given to the networks, cable, or pay-per-view? How much of the receipts would be given to the candidates, their parties or others involved in staging the event? What about book rights, TV appearances and pistol endorsements for the winner?
But enough talk. Gentlemen (or ladies)! On the signal, walk ten paces, turn and fire!

MilkPEP on agencies
I would like to clarify and correct the article " `Milk mustache' ads, Bozell come under fire" (AA, Nov. 2). It misquotes me and gives the impression that the National Fluid Milk Processors Education Program board assigned its advertising account without conducting a competitive review of agencies. This is incorrect.
In 1991, an industry committee conducted an exhaustive agency review. Written proposals were solicited from numerous agencies and final presentations were made by three finalists (DDB Needham Wordwide, Ketchum Advertising and Bozell Worldwide).
The recommendations of the industry committee were reviewed by the MilkPEP board and the board authorized awarding Bozell the business. Bozell continues to do an outstanding job as the MilkPEP agency.

I enjoy Rance Crain's editorial page comments. Keep up the good work. If memory serves me right, the "Venus and Mars" piece from Oct. 26, 1998 should be attributed to columnist Dave Barry.

SCANDINAVIA: INTERNET GAINS POPULARITY.(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)
Norway boasts a high telecommunications penetration level with a rate of 57 main lines per 100 inhabitants. Forty-seven percent of all Norwegians over the age of 13 have Internet access. In Sweden, there are over 600,000 Internet bank customers and the number is augmenting at a quick pace. In Denmark, the number of Internet subscribers exhibits a an outstanding growth, from 167,000 in 1997 to a projected 800,000 by the onset of 2000.
No, it's never healthy.(POLICY & PRACTICE)(Brief article)
The Food and Drug Administration has warned online retailers to stop marketing tobacco products with misleading or unsubstantiated claims that the products can reduce the risk of tobacco-related diseases. In 11 warning letters, the agency cited the online retailers for a variety of illegal claims, including use of terms such as "'light," "mild," "low," "less toxic," and "safer." Companies can't make these claims unless the FDA has okayed them, and the FDA hasn't okayed any such claim for any tobacco product. The agency also cited some Internet retailers for selling flavored cigarettes. "There is no known safe tobacco product," said Dr. Lawrence Deyton, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, in a statement. "It is illegal for tobacco companies or retailers, including internet sellers, to make unsubstantiated claims or statements that imply tobacco products reduce health risks."
FELIX CAVALIERE HAS HAD WHIRLWIND CAREER.(Stars)
Byline: Mark Bialczak Staff writer
As a student at Syracuse University in the early 1960s, Felix Cavaliere's major was pre-med.
But music was always his passion.
The native of Pelham, Westchester County, had taken classical piano lessons from the age of 6.
At SU, he became a member of a rock band named The Escorts and started playing at parties.
Frank Malfitano, founder and executive director of the M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest - where Cavaliere will perform Friday at Onondaga Community College - recalls seeing Cavaliere perform at fraternity and sorority parties.
"They'd have bands on porches," Malfitano says. "His songs weren't fully formed yet, but you could see he was an incredible artist with a lot of soul."
The summer after his junior year, Cavaliere recalls during a recent phone interview, he landed a job as a musician at a resort in the Catskills.
His days as an SU student were toast.
"I got bit bad by the showbiz bug," says Cavaliere, 66.
SU's loss turned out to be the world's gain.
"One of the ties (in the Catskills) led me to Joey Dee and the Starlighters," Cavaliere explains. "They flew me over to Europe for a tour. That was the beginning of my Magical Mystery Tour."
What a whirlwind it turned out to be for the singer and keyboardist.
"I worked with the Beatles over in Europe, in Germany and Sweden, before them coming to the United States," Cavaliere says. "I said, 'We can do this. We have to put together a group of guys that can shock the world.' And we did."
That group was the Young Rascals, with Cavaliere joined by Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish. In October 1965, they scored a gig at a chic Long Island club, The Barge. One of the people who caught the set was Atlantic Records promoter and manager Sid Bernstein.
The Atlantic deal paid off quickly, with the single "Good Lovin'" hitting No. 1 in 1966. The name was trimmed to The Rascals, but the hit list kept growing with "Groovin'," "A Beautiful Morning" and "People Got to Be Free."
Brigati and Cornish left in 1971, and the band broke up a year later.
Cavaliere kept recording on his own and joined the band Treasure in 1977. He released another solo record in 1994, and The Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2009, Cavaliere was inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame.
Malfitano calls Cavaliere one of the top soul singers in history.
Yet ...
"Disco came in and destroyed all of our careers
for six, seven years," Cavaliere says. "There was no music out there for us. MTV came around. And then the other thing that came around was 'The Big Chill.' That (1983) movie revived all of us. Our music took on a new light with commercials and live performances. It was a whole new world."
The last five years have been challenging, Cavaliere says, because of the economy and the increased digitalization of all music.
"I did a couple of albums the last few years, but found it almost a waste of time," Cavaliere says. "If it's not on the Internet, there's no place to buy it. I'm looking to develop my own site more."
Cavaliere says he'll consider Friday's performance a homecoming.
"We've made a lot of friends there that have become lifelong friends," says Cavaliere, citing Malfitano, who was instrumental to Cavaliere's 1993 induction into the Syracuse Area Music Awards Hall of Fame.
Cavaliere says he discovered the power of performance during his days at SU.
''I saw that it was less about entertaining Felix and more about entertaining the audience," he says. "You've got to get them up dancing and have them rocking, or you're not doing your job.

Prosper Announces New In-Person Educational Summit.
Prosper, a one-on-one distance learning and education leader, will host the first ever 'Prosper Live' event in June that will allow students to meet their coaches in person
PROVO, Utah -- Select students enrolled in the Prosper coaching curriculum will have the opportunity to participate in the newly created Prosper Live program that will be launched this June.
Prosper Live takes the distance-learning education model to a new level by providing students the opportunity to visit the Prosper headquarters to meet the coaches they have been working with online and over the phone while also participating in a two-day educational summit.
"Prosper Live was developed because so many of our students come to love their coach and our company. Prosper Live allows us to take that relationship to the next level and adds even more value to our students' educational experience," said Prosper CEO Ethan Willis.
Fifteen students who are currently enrolled or who have successfully completed the program will participate in the event. Many were invited by their personal coach to attend after showing particular excitement or success in their chosen area of study. The coaches will instruct students on a variety of topics and wealth building strategies including real estate and stock market investing, entrepreneurship, e-commerce, and personal development. Attendees of Prosper Live will also enjoy feature guest speakers from best-selling authors to industry specialists. Guests will also take a guided tour of Prosper to see the company operations, visit with various employees and meet the company executives. They will also be introduced to additional products and services Prosper offers that can aid in their continued education.
"Having students come visit for live coaching is something that has never really been done in the distance-learning industry. Typically, you can develop a relationship with your coach or instructor over the Internet or phone, but you never get to meet in person and gain that extra connection. Prosper Live speaks to our commitment to providing exceptional coaching while building long-lasting relationships with our students," said Willis.

Research and Markets: United States Telecommunications Report Q4 2010.
DUBLIN -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/e62d4e/united_states_tele) has announced the addition of the "United States Telecommunications Report Q4 2010" report to their offering.
United States Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on the United States' telecommunications industry.
As in previous quarters, some operators made minor revisions to their historical data, which we at BMI have incorporated into our forecasts, along with recently released data from Q210. Our forecasts for mobile data have been modified slightly upwards following strong US mobile subscription additions for the first half of the year, while the number of fixed lines is decreasing at a slightly quicker rate than anticipated. Broadband usage forecasts have been adjusted slightly downwards. In all cases, the adjustments have been fairly small. Recent developments have re-emphasised the importance of data services to mobile operators, with particular interest in the next generation in network technology.
Verizon Wireless intends to reach 100mn Americans with its LTE coverage by the end of 2010, announcing at a recent communications conference that 30 NFL cities (cities with NFL franchises) would be connected to the 4G technology by the end of 2010. AT&T plans on launching its own commercial LTE network by mid-2011, a significant acceleration of its previous launch plans. Meanwhile, both operators along with T-Mobile USA, have been enhancing and augmenting their 3G networks with software-based upgrades, meaning that faster data processing and transmission speeds have been rolled out very quickly and with no disruptions to the networks. T-Mobile USA, though, scored something of a goal by touting its HSPA upgrade (to HSPA+) as a 4G offering. Telecoms analysts and smartphone/mobile computing users were quick to play down those claims. T-Mobile has not commented publicly on plans to launch LTE. MetroPCS, a small player in the market, launched its own 4G wireless network, along with an LTE-enabled handset manufactured by Samsung. The companys first-mover advantage in its LTE network, LTE handset, and competitive pricing (voice, text, and mobile internet for US$55 per month) should not be underestimated. The extent to which the companys size will constrain its potential, however, remains to be seen.
Sprint Nextel was able to reverse a long-term trend of losing subscribers with significant increases in wholesale and prepaid customers, due to newly acquired MVNO Virgin Mobile and Common Cents Mobile, a flat-rate prepaid service available in about 700 Walmart stores. Higher-ARPU postpaid subscribers continue to decline. However, the postpaid quarterly churn rate was below 2% for the first time in five years. Sprint remains committed to its WiMAX-based 4G network, which has expanded to more markets. Sprints handsets have been popular, scoring a surprise hit with its EVO WiMAX handset, even against the backdrop of Apple/AT&Ts unveiling of a fourth generation iPhone. More recently, Sprint's dual 3G/4G phone, the Samsung Epic 4G, were launched in early September with one of the best first-day sales of any Sprint device.
Sprints WiMAX partner, Clearwire, intimated that it would be interested in migrating to LTE once its exclusivity with WiMAX developer Intel comes to an end. Were Sprint to replace its WiMAX plant with LTE, this could be a costly move; instead, it is possible that a Sprint/Clearwire LTE platform would operate alongside WiMAX. Nevertheless, the WiMAX business posted a strong 94% y-o-y increase in customers in Q110.
Broadband take-up continues to grow robustly, although our forecasts have been reined in slightly. The growth has been led by the larger fixed-line telecoms operators and the multiservice cable operators. There were 77.9mn broadband subscribers by the end of 2009, a figure that grew to more than 79.5mn by June 2010. AT&T and Comcast continue battling to lead the market, and Comcast overtook AT&T in Q309. The gap has consistently widened in the nine months that have followed. We now expect there will be 98.0mn total broadband subscribers in the US by 2014, with a penetration rate of more than 30%.

Broadband Services Market in West Africa on an Upswing despite Challenges
The broadband services market in West Africa is growing significantly despite the poor infrastructure and restrictive regulatory practices. The advent of wireless technologies as an alternative to the often poor and outdated fixed-line technologies has promoted rapid market growth. Additionally, West African governments have begun to realise the importance of information and communication technology (ICT) in economic development and have made some improvements in the regulatory space. "The introduction of wireless and fixed-wireless technologies in West Africa coupled with the low broadband penetration rates in the region have been key growth drivers," says the analyst of this research. "Historically, broadband development in the region has been driven by fixed-line incumbents but, through wireless technologies, internet service providers (ISPs) can circumvent the slow or stagnant development of fixed-line infrastructure." Moreover, with a regional penetration rate of less than five per cent, the addressable market in this region is huge, encouraging new participants to enter here.
Despite impressive developments in broadband, issues related to affordability and literacy, coupled with the limited financial capacity of operators to invest in infrastructure, continue to hamper market growth. The cost of doing business in some countries is prohibitively high and the market remains characterised by incumbent monopolies, impeding steady market expansion. Low literacy and rampant poverty in West African countries continue to limit the level and extent of Internet usage and consequently, broadband uptake. Incumbent operators have a monopoly on international gateways and the development of backbone infrastructure. "Current networks are outdated and in shambles except in Senegal and the Ivory Coast," notes the analyst. "This affects the quality and type of services that ISPs can provide."
Restrictions on wireless technology deployment are inadequate. Broadband providers have turned to these technologies to enable them to effectively compete with incumbents and exert better control over their networks. "Broadband prices have reduced, registering an average decrease of twenty per cent in the past two years, making these services more affordable," concludes the analyst. "Technology partnerships between companies have further alleviated issues related to the shortage of investment capital for network expansion."

Magnolia Launches Web Content Management Solution for the Broadcast Media; Magnolia-on-Air Dramatically Cuts Time and Costs for Transferring Broadcast Content to the Web.
M2 PRESSWIRE-4 December 2008-Magnolia: Magnolia Launches Web Content Management Solution for the Broadcast Media; Magnolia-on-Air Dramatically Cuts Time and Costs for Transferring Broadcast Content to the Web(C)1994-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:03122008
Magnolia, the Open Source content management vendor that delivers simplicity on an enterprise scale, has today officially launched Magnolia-on-Air, a new dedicated solution for broadcasters and organisations looking to manage their own broadcast content over the internet. The workflow within Magnolia-on-Air allows users to capture broadcast content and rapidly repurpose it for publication on the web by providing a seamless environment for transferring content between professional broadcast systems and a feature-rich interactive web-presence.
The system also allows users to draw online feedback and community content back into the broadcast production environment - a key feature as members of the public are now often the first to capture footage of breaking stories on mobile phone cameras and other devices.
"Based on the needs of Magnolia's existing customers in the broadcast industry, the system has been designed to cut production costs, get rich media content to the web first and then, to draw timely, online community-participation back into the broadcast environment," explains Magnolia's CTO Boris Kraft. "We have taken the best Open Source technology components to develop an open and highly interoperable system based on the real-world needs of the modern broadcast media. But with the web increasingly becoming a rich-media environment, we have already received much broader interest in the system from large corporate and public sector organisations looking to take their own broadcast channels online for corporate communications."
Magnolia-on-Air not only captures high-definition rich-media streams but also the surrounding broadcast metadata, including presenters' scripts, editors' notes and almost any other information required from the host systems. With all the relevant information in the Magnolia-on-Air system, web editors have one intuitive browser-based interface in which they can edit video and audio streams, create and re-size static photography, as well as to produce headlines, leaders and accompanying stories from the surrounding metadata.
Answering the call from modern television audiences for ever-more interactivity with programming, the Magnolia-on-Air also allows broadcasters to instantly draw comment back from the web into the broadcast environment to create real-time dialogue with viewers. The system even allows rich-media content, uploaded to the web by viewers, to be pulled directly into the broadcast environment. This allows broadcasters to capture and instantly broadcast first-footage of breaking stories caught on camera by members of the public.
Magnolia-on-Air has been developed in conjunction with FutureLab, a technology innovation think-tank and development company with extensive experience in the media, telecoms and cable businesses. FutureLab's existing customers include Cablecom (Liberty Global), Swisscom, SF-Schweizer Fernsehen (Swiss TV). The online content delivery platform within Magnolia-on-Air is based on Futurelab's high-perfomance Mediaflow architecture which has been proven in large ISP environment.
"We have already received a great deal of interest in the product, even ahead of the official launch. The broadcast industry seems genuinely amazed at what can be done with Open Source technology," concludes Kraft. "Our first commercial implementation of Magnolia-on-Air is already underway and will be announced early in the new year."
