Construction industry continues registering employment drops.

MEXICO CITY, Sep 01, 2003 (El Economista - Empresas y Negocios/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX) -- During the first half of 2003, occupied personnel in the construction industry dropped by 6.8% compared to the same period 2002, however, real average salaries increased by 6.9% reported the National Statistics Institute (INEGI).

Based on the Construction Companies National Survey (ENEC), companies affiliated with the Construction Industry Mexican Chamber in June registered a 2.4% dropped in occupied personnel compared to June 2002. White-collar workers decreased by 10.9% while blue-collar workers dropped by 0.3% in the same period.

INEGI also reported that real average salaries increased by 6.4% in June year-on-year.

Referring to the distribution per type of work, construction related to general buildings such as houses, schools, industrial facilities, commerce and services, hospital and clinics, among others, represented 41.8%, while transportation works such as highways, roads, urbanization works and others represented 21.3%. Oil and petrochemical-related works contributed with 12.4% of June's total construction works, while electricity and communications works represented 7.1%.

INEGI also reported that mining production dropped by 3.5% in real terms in the first half 2003 year-on-year.
